Trezor® Hardware Wallet | Start Your Device (Official)

A clean, friendly start guide with a modern body theme. Follow these steps to set up your Trezor device securely and confidently.

Quick overview

This page walks you through the first-time experience for a Trezor hardware wallet: unboxing, connecting, initializing, creating or restoring a seed, and securing firmware and backup. The visual theme emphasizes clarity and safety — deep background tones, a luminous cyan-to-violet accent, and readable cards for each phase of the flow.

Before you start

  • Have a clean, offline surface to work on.
  • Use the official Trezor website or Trezor Suite for firmware and device onboarding.
  • Do not share your recovery seed with anyone and write it down by hand on the provided card.

Step-by-step setup

  1. 1

    Unbox and inspect

Open the packaging and inspect the tamper-evident seal. If the seal looks damaged or tampered with, stop and contact official support. Confirm the device model and packaging contents match the included guide.

  2. 2

    Connect to your computer

Connect the Trezor to your computer using the supplied USB cable. For most users, connecting to suite.trezor.io or installing Trezor Suite is the recommended, official path. Only use the official site and check the domain carefully in your browser.

  3. 3

    Install firmware

If prompted, install the official firmware. The device will display a unique identifier and prompt you to confirm the fingerprint on-screen. Never install firmware from untrusted third parties.

  4. 4

    Create or restore a seed

Choose to create a new recovery seed or restore an existing one. When creating a new seed, write the words down on paper using a pen (not a screenshot). Keep this paper in a secure, offline location. Consider a fireproof safe or a bank deposit box for long-term protection.

  5. 5

    Set a PIN

Set a PIN code on the device. The PIN ensures that even if someone physically has your device, they cannot access private keys without the code. Choose a PIN that is memorable but not easily guessable.

  6. 6

    Verify and practice

After setup, test by receiving a small amount of cryptocurrency to a new address and then confirming the transaction details on the Trezor display. Confirm addresses shown in the software match those on the device screen. This prevents address substitution attacks.

Security tips & best practices

Never: enter your recovery seed into a computer, phone, or cloud service. Treat it like cash.
Do: use a durable backup method. Consider metal backup plates for long-term resilience against fire and water.
Keep software updated: regularly check Trezor Suite and firmware updates from official channels only.
Use passphrases (advanced): a passphrase acts as a 25th word for the seed. It offers powerful protection but if forgotten, the funds are irretrievable.

Troubleshooting

Device not recognized

Try a different USB cable or USB port, avoid hubs. Ensure the device is powered. Reboot your computer and check browser permissions for the Trezor site.

Forgot PIN

If you forget the PIN you will need to perform a factory reset and restore from your recovery seed. Without the recovery seed, your funds cannot be retrieved.
